To Dream Of Success

“Tonight is the last night. I know that everyone is tired but we’ve done well so lets do our best tonight!” That is Mrs. G, our theater director. She is giving her speech about how well we have done and how we should keep it up. This is the third time I’ve heard it this week. I can still remember how astonished I was about making it into the play. When I was in junior high school it didn’t matter how hard I tried but I just couldn’t get a part in a play. Amazingly enough not only did I get one part, but I got three! I couldn’t believe it! I kept thinking; if I wasn’t good enough for junior high what makes me good enough for a high school play?

“I can’t believe it! I’m actually in a play! Thank you so much Mrs. G! You’ve answered a dream I’ve had for years. I still can’t believe its true.” I told her before we got ready for the opening scene. Everyone worked hard for the play to go well, especially my self and two others. I was the only one with three parts but some of my new friends had gotten two parts and they were just as excited as I was!

I just still can’t believe it! I’ve finally accomplished my dream; I’m in a play! Okay, calm down. You need to keep calm your almost up. Wait for Ernie to say your name and you can go. This is going to be so much fun, Loren and I are going to argue and them race off stage.

“Here is Balin and Dwalin.” Ernie said it that’s our que.

“Hello, the kitchen’s that way right?” the improvisation is going well almost done with the first part.

“I’ll beat you there!” Lauren teased; she’s Dwalin.

“Nuh uh, I’ll race you! Okay ready...” I run off before here and then... “Go!”

“That’s cheating! Come on make it fair I’m hungry too!” Lauren sounds like a little kid it’s so cute! That is it for my first part now all I have to do is put on a vest and get back to the door to be “Nori,” too bad I’m all alone for this one. At least I still get to come up with my own lines here! This is getting to be just as fun as the first two times.

“And finally, this is Nori.” Ok here I am again!

“Nice to meet you, um...where is the kitchen I’m starving!” And Now I’m running off the stage again and I won’t be on for another two or three scenes. Man this is going by fast I don’t ever want it to end. I wish we had another show night.

Unfortunately before I knew it the play was coming into the last act. Now I am Bard the archer for the village under attack by the dragon, who is played by my friend Eddie. We call him special Ed, mostly because he can really be creepy; which is why he is also Golem. Suddenly Lauren goes running across the stage, “My baby! My baby! Someone help my baby!” Isn’t she good? Now I’m running across the stage in my socks, don’t do this it hurts! I’m on one knee and I deliver my lines, flawlessly I might add, black out and I’m off the stage.

Okay one last scene Elise and then your home free. Keep calm and don’t forget your lines. Deep breath! Okay try to keep calm. Thorin has fallen in battle and now I rush onto the stage. “We shall not forget our fallen. He needs a proper burial. I can’t believe he’s really gone.” Those are my last lines; Lauren and I are now trying to drag our comrade off the stage. It is kind of strange I actually cried, but I don’t know why. I know I didn’t want this night to end but it has all that’s left is the curtain call.

Black out, the curtain closes and all the actors line up on the stage. The lights go up as the curtain opens. We all step forward and take each other’s hands and bow as one. I cannot believe my ears and eyes though. The audience is standing and their screaming cheers to us. This is not what I expected; I thought they were just going to sit there. Wow, this is so amazing. I can’t believe that I just went through my first play, and I did well! The curtain closes again and everyone scrambles to get his or her costume and make up off. We’re not allowed to go out into the lobby with them on. I ended up being one of the first few to get out. I just really want to see my mom I couldn’t see her during the play.

“Excuse me, I have a question.” A woman said.

“Yes, what an I help you with.” This is a little weird no one pays all that much attention to me.

“I was wondering; were you playing multiple people? I saw that there was a young lady in the program who had several parts but I thought it was a typo.” She said almost as startled, as I was that I had received three parts.

“Yes, ma’am I did have three parts. I was really excited about it and I’m really proud of my self that I was able to do it.”

“I’m surprised that you weren’t over worked. Why did you take so many parts?” she asked.

“The parts were offered to me by the director, at first I didn’t want so many but I’m glad I took on the responsibility. I’m glad I took them I feel like this is what I was meant to do and I’ll gladly take on much harder roles in the future.”

“Well, you did a good job.” She said, “and I hope that you are part of the musical this year. Good night.” She walked away leaving me baffled. I’m really proud of my self and now that I have found my mom I’m going to go home and sleep. All of a sudden I feel really tired but this whole experience is well worth it! I can’t wait till the musical; maybe I will even get to be a leading character.
